Mesa Police to Target School Areas for Back to School

In an effort to reduce school related collisions, the Governor's Office of Highway Safety is partnering with Mesa Police to enforce traffic and criminal laws.

In order to increase public awareness and keep children safe as the school year returns, the Mesa Police Department will target school zones and surrounding areas with saturated patrols. The increased patrols will start on the morning of August 7th, which is the first day of classes for the Mesa Public Schools and Gilbert Public Schools districts. The intensive enforcement will continue through the first two weeks of classes. While traffic enforcement is a year-round priority for the Mesa Police Department, these high profile areas will be heavily patrolled during this two-week period.

The Mesa Police Department offers these safety tips related to traffic around schools:
  • Follow all speed and parking laws. School areas are well marked. Park only in designated areas.
  • Establish a meeting time and location to pick up your child.
  • Be patient. Allow plenty of time to deal with heavy traffic flow during the beginning and end of school.
  • Do no use mobile phones or other potentially distracting devices while driving around schools.
  • Expect the unexpected. Students make mistakes when it comes to pedestrian and bicycle safety.
  • Stop and look both ways before pulling out of parking lots and side streets.

Funding was provided by the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.

Dobson graveyard officers end Day's night!

Dobson graveyard crew end Day's night!

Southwest Mesa was getting hit hard with vehicle and residential burglaries of late.  Well, in the wee hours of Tuesday morning (around 4am), the Dobson graveyard patrol officers got their man! They responded to a call of a suspicious subject trying doors on condos in the area of 2300 W. Lindner.  Graveyard patrol officers dropped a net on the area. They located the suspect vehicle, engine running, loaded with what would later be identified as stolen property, drugs and weapons.

Officers caught 28 year-old Tyler Day as he burst out the front door of a residence, while the victim homeowners slept.  The ensuing investigation would identify numerous residential and vehicle burglary victims in this complex that night. Investigators believe Day may be responsible for additional crimes of this ilk in their district and are working hard to put additional cases together.  This was an excellent example of a community working with their police department to thwart crime and demonstrates what can happen if you "say something, when you see something."  Our hats off to Dobson graveyard officers for a job well done....again.

Day was booked on numerous felony charges involving burglary, drugs and weapons charges.

The tenacious efforts of the investigators led them to 22 year-old, Dominique Franklin, whom admitted to the robberies.  During a search warrant of his residence, stolen property (from the robberies), a hand gun, and drugs were seized.  Franklin was booked on Robbery, Kidnapping, and Drug charges.  Way to represent guys! Nice work!
