Arrest Made In Fatal Crash @ Brown / Recker on June 9th

On the morning of Monday, June 9, Mesa PD traffic detectives investigated a double-fatality collision at the intersection of Brown and Recker. Investigators believe a FJ Cruiser, driven by Ingrid Morataya (pictured), slammed into several vehicles that were stopped for a red light at Brown for northbound Recker. At a speed estimated to be approximately 90 mph, the FJ Cruiser rear-ended a Chevy Malibu which then struck another vehicle and side-swiped a 4th vehicle. The two occupants of the Malibu were pronounced deceased at the scene. Morataya exited her vehicle and began acting strangely, exihibiting signs of impairment, before she was transported to the hospital.

On Monday, June 16, Morataya was arrested by our detectives as she was released from the hospital. She has been booked on two counts of Manslaughter, one count each of Aggravated Assault, Reckless Endangerment and Aggravated DUI. Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the victims in this investigation.
