Mesa Police Detectives have arrested Michael A. Abel for one count of First Degree Murder related to an October 18, 2017, homicide investigation. Abel was arrested on October 23, 2017. He is accused in the shooting death of Austin Parton at the Ramada Inn, 1666 S. Dobson, Mesa AZ. The investigation showed that Abel placed an ad online to sell a laptop computer. Cold Case Homicide Arrest

The Mesa Police Department is proud to announce an arrest in a 2002 homicide.  David Michael Vazquez, age 43, was arrested on September 28, 2017 in Houston Texas for the shooting death of Kelly Hammond in Mesa.  The shooting took place at a house party at 1246 S. Lesueur, Mesa on November 22, 2002 when it was reported that Vazquez and Hammond got into an altercation.  During the altercation, Vazquez produced a handgun and shot Hammond several times.

In 2014 the case was re-examined by Cold Case Detectives.  Previous witnesses and investigative leads were located and interviewed, ultimately leading to the arrest of Vazquez.  This is another example of the determination by Homicide Detectives to provide closure to families on any unsolved cases.

Vazquez is currently in custody in Texas awaiting extradition back to Arizona.
