Help Stop Car Hopping. Lock Your Car!

What is Car Hopping?  Car Hopping is a crew of two to five (2-5) thieves slowly walking down the street, quickly checking vehicle doors while a driver follows along for a quick getaway.
Once inside, they quickly grab what they can and move on to the next open vehicle door.  Suspects have told investigators this type of criminal activity can provide up to $1,500 in profit by stealing your valuables in one night and about one in fifty (50) vehicles will have a firearm inside. During the first three months of this year in Mesa, approximately 63% of the vehicle burglaries had an unsecured vehicle.

Stop giving away your expensive and personal items.  If the doors on your car are unlocked, your items are consider as gifts for burglars. If your doors are locked, it is likely the burglar will move along until they find an open vehicle.
For the Car Hoppers....When we catch you, and we will catch you, it's a class 4 felony for every vehicle you break into.  You might find yourself going from Car Hopping to Jail Hopping!

If you see suspicious vehicles in your neighborhoods, call the the the Mesa Police at 480-644-2211. If you see the crime in progress, dial 911.

Robbery - Arrest

On April 6, 2018 Mesa Police Officers responded to a fight call at 250 W 5th Street in Mesa, AZ. Officers arrived and quickly learned this was not a fight but was rather a robbery and assault call. The victims were a mother and daughter who just returned home and were attempting to enter their residence when a male suspect with a stocking mask ran up to them and pepper sprayed both of them in their face and then physically assaulted them. The suspect eventually reached into a purse and stole a wallet and cash before fleeing the scene. During the struggle one of the victims pulled on the stocking mask and both victims recognized the suspect as a known male named David Garcia.

Officers responded and both victims positively identified 35 year old Garcia as the suspect. Within a few hours Officers located Garcia at his residence where he was detained and ultimately admitted to being present at the scene. Garcia has been charged with one count of Robbery and one count of Assault. Great work and follow up by all involved, a violent robber was arrested within hours of committing the offense and the victims can have some closure to their experience.
