Updated From ICE Agent Shooting on May 8, 2018


The following is an update pertaining to the shooting incident from Wednesday, May 8, 2018 at 822 S. Alma School:

At this time, the investigation has revealed that Special Agents from ICE Homeland Security Investigations, were working a narcotics investigation and met the suspects at 822 S. Alma School Road, Mesa.  During their meeting, one of the suspects produced a handgun and pointed it at the Special Agent in an apparent attempt to rob him.  The Special Agent produced his duty weapon and fired at this suspect.   Additional Agents quickly arrived and also engaged the suspect as he continued to point his weapon at the Special Agents.  The suspect was struck by multiple rounds which ended the confrontation.  The suspect involved in the shooting incident has been identified at Giovanny Leon, age 23.  We have been advised that Mr. Leon has succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.    Mr. Leon’s next of kin have been notified. 
 
The second suspect involved was arrested inside the vehicle and has been identified as Carlos Casillas-Mendoza, age 18.  During his interview, Casillas-Mendoza admitted his involvement in the attempted robbery of the Federal Agents.  He has been booked on one count of First Degree Murder (Felony Murder Rule), one count of Armed Robbery, and one count of Aggravated Robbery.

The investigation is still ongoing at this time.
